Flooding outbreak in Nigeria rises concern 2024

The Floods have caused over 100,000 homes destroyed and many residents lost their lives to the incidents.

The current flooding situation is severe; happening in most parts of the northeast and some parts in the south-south part of Nigeria. According  a report Aljazeera, with millions of people affected by this flood, the flooding was caused by the Alau Dam breaching it's banks, resulting in damage to infrastructure, including bridges, and hampering access to essential services like hospitals, schools, and markets. The situation is further complicated by the risk of disease outbreaks, and the evacuation of people in high-risk areas to safer ground is ongoing.

Magnitude of destruction submerged to some states especially in Maiduguri with over 239,000 people affected by flash floods in Maiduguri Council and Jere Local Government Areas.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has reported that the flooding has affected over 414,000 people, with 37 deaths and 58 injuries recorded.

Reportedly, all hands must be on deck to help with the situation at hand. The National Emergency Management Agency is working on providing food,shelter and medical assistance to the victims affected. The Borno State Government has announced cash relief for victims, ranging from 500,000 to 1,000,000 individuals and also announced that schools should go on break

The flooding has also led to the displacement of people, with many moving to temporary shelters like the muna IDP camp, which was already hosting over 50,000 internally displaced individuals. The situation is dire to the extend that Shehu of Borno describing it as an "Act of God". More so, the Governor of the state announced urgent aid mobilization.
